Cadillac Adopts Nasa Approach to Assemble Squad from the Ground Up for Melbourne Race Debut.

A little more than twelve months in the past at the Vegas Grand Prix, the Cadillac racing team were at last given the green light as F1's most recent entrant for 2026. Establishing the squad from nothing has entailed a intense operating tempo that the team boss, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the NASA lunar mission. As the sport descends on Las Vegas this weekend, Cadillac understand the clock is ticking.

The Race Against Time to Australia

At the last event of the season to be hosted in the United States, with approximately a hundred days to go before they hit the circuit for the maiden outing in Australia at the first race of 2026, the Cadillac F1 project have made significant progress but, in what must seem like a sisyphean challenge, they are conscious there will not be adequate time.

The CTO, Nick Chester, became part of the newly formed team in March 2023 shortly after it was formed, when the organization were without even an confirmed place. He has been at its heart since then and gets a knowing grin when reflecting on the ride.

“There might be five minutes reflecting at what you have accomplished and think: ‘Amazing, what an achievement what the team has created in under three years,’” Chester states. “And then the very next instant you consider: ‘Yes, we still have quite a lot to do.’”

A Unique Challenge

The CTO had success at the Renault team in Fernando Alonso’s victorious years of 2005/2006 and was in control of technical direction at the then-new Mercedes Formula E team, but no other project has quite compared with the task of launching the iconic American Cadillac marque, a manufacturer-backed entry backed by the corporate entity, General Motors, into F1.

“Creating an F1 team from the ground up, how often do you get the opportunity to do that?” he observes. “It's unparalleled. In an established team you don’t get the possibility to alter organizational mindset.”

With each passing day that passes thoughts are increasingly concentrated on the looming critical moment in Melbourne and targets are being handled.

“One must presume that any new team joining the grid is going to be last but simply getting on to the grid will be an accomplishment in itself,” the team principal commented recently and while the CTO agreed with this sentiment he believed the squad had a reputation to build as well.
“The initial objective we want to show is that we deserve to be there,” he says. “In order that we arrive and we operate well. We seek to prove that this is a professional operation performing the right things on the race track. Once we prove that we’re really credible, then we aim to demonstrate improvement from there on.”

Racing Talent and Recruitment Effort

In the summer they signed Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas as their racers for 2026, a tandem notable for their invaluable experience in performing at the front in two championship-winning squads, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes-AMG, and Valtteri Bottas echoed the sentiment of fighting spirit.

“Of course, we have a realistic outlook,” he said. “There’s going to be a massive task to do, and it’s going to be most likely a difficult start, because it is F1. But our goal isn't to finish last. I believe with this setup, with this team, these personnel, it's entirely possible we can't manage to advance swiftly to the front and taste victory.”

To that end hiring has been in top gear, with employees now reaching more than 400 and intended to hit the objective of 600 quickly. Alongside their current base at the UK base, the organization are in the phase of completing an HQ at the Fishers location in Indy and there is the GM plant in Charlotte, where they are constructing the center to manufacture the 2029 engine, scheduled for the 2029 season – until then they will use Ferrari power units – and the Toyota's wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany. It is a complex organisation, different from the movement in the sport for more centralization, and has prompted the fresh organizational mindset to which Chester referred to.

NASA Model

“We've drawn heavily from the NASA moon mission,” remarked Lowdon shortly before the British GP in mid-season. “We’re realistic, we recognize how difficult it is. The deadlines, are incredibly tight. OK, it's not a space expedition, but it can seem that way.”

So they have implemented, as opposed to the traditional management structure, a decentralized management comparable to that of the space agency's, where there were a variety of Apollo teams all working on distinct elements of the program across a variety of locations.

“If you have to go through a procedure where a challenge emerges and they escalate it to their supervisor, that leader communicates with a supervisor in another department, it travels back down, it’s super slow,” notes the CTO. “So we empower people to really get on with it. Moving away from hierarchical consent for all decisions is far more efficient and faster.”

The Future

The effectiveness of this agile approach will be tested in the pressure of racing when the season begins and there is no little amount on the line for the sport, too. Cadillac have taken on as their development driver the emerging American Colton Herta
