Coaching an Infant to Grow into an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Money?

Child education concept
The organization behind the advert explains that what appears like "extravagance or peculiarity" is in fact "intentional commitment in initial learning".

"Parents located in north London is looking for an exceptional and qualified instructor to guide their smallest child on his first steps to becoming an British gentleman."

Looking at this post, you might naturally miss the phrase "first-steps" as mere an expression.

But, it may be the most significant element of this unique position posting, as it seeks to recruit a teacher for a one-year-old.

Many of submissions have already been received since the unidentified family published their call for the highly paid tutor, who must be "a uniquely qualified person".

During the past few weeks, the listing has gained attention in the press, with numerous questioning why?

Innovative Idea

Adam Caller, chief executive of Tutors International, which is supporting the family in their hunt, said that notwithstanding initial scepticism, he viewed the concept "visionary", and "advanced".

When he spoke with the family, he mentioned they understood the atypical nature of their requirement, and how young their son is.

However, they stated that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had waited until their firstborn was five, and by that age "cultural influence had by then set in".

What precisely does the family refer to by "cultural bias"?

It's "all-encompassing", the expert replied. "How you eat, the manner you speak".

He said the elder child had picked up "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural norms. The family informed Adam they wished to avoid history to happen again with their infant.

The plan: To engage a British tutor, who needs to speak with standard English accent, to guide the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm state the listing has initiated a wider discussion about how parents view schooling, advantage and the function of family background in learning.

Osmotic Learning

"Much of the development at the start here is somewhat osmotic," stated Adam.

It's via this osmosis that the family are aiming the child will acquire the English characteristics they want to cultivate.

The consultant noted the tutor had to be somebody who went to "the right kinds of schools – the same kinds of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The tutor just has to be the suitable individual, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, effortlessly," he added.

Cost Not Relevant

The family informed him the successful candidate should preferably also have knowledge of or interest in equestrian activities, winter sports, creative fields and instrumental training so as to shape the child in a broad spectrum of passions.

Additionally though, he said the family wanted the tutor to register the child on a range of classes so the child would be "pony-riding and starting an tool by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's perspective, helping their son become a "English gentleman" will bring about achievement and open doors.

"For all the rights and wrongs of that, because it's undoubtedly a status symbol," he comments.

However, despite all this instruction in "Britishness", would the child absorb so-called cultural influence from the multicultural family he resides with anyway?

"Absolutely", replied the CEO. "The parents understand this may not work, but they've merely embraced the attitude of, 'why not attempt it and we should start as early as we can', because the expense of it is not a concern," he stated.

Impractical

A number of in the tutoring industry who express these concerns.

Another CEO, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who also offer personal educators, commented that "the process of embracing two identities, or actually, becoming oneself, is something that must be lived into, not designed."

Peter noted that he had moved from the Far East to the Britain at the period of seven, and had been educated experiencing and living two backgrounds. He progressed to study at Cambridge University.

The educator was the first individual born in China to be elected to the position of Treasurer of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The idea that a single person can act as a embodiment of UK identity, a person who can possibly transplant the attributes of a English gentleman to a infant child, appears optimistic and impractical," he stated.

"In my experience, employing a typically British tutor from babyhood will not necessarily achieve the goal they desire.

"I never had that kind of mentor, and nevertheless I have been fortunate enough to enjoy numerous of the situations they hope for their son."

He added: "The fact is, personal identity can not be imposed from the outside influences; it must be embraced, and it must originate internally."

Acquiring Englishness

Of course, UK identity is something the CEO thinks can be educated – and sold.

"I believe the fact that the global community regards us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
