England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and Wales have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks before the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
