The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
